Master the Finnish language at your own pace through this comprehensive Turku Åbo Summer School online course designed for beginners. With flexible learning options and optional support webinars, you’ll develop essential communication skills while building a strong foundation in Finnish vocabulary and grammar.

This self-paced course is designed for total beginners to independently learn the basics of Finnish through the Moodle learning environment. Students will learn the most common Finnish phrases and acquire basic vocabulary and grammar skills to manage everyday situations in Finnish. The course provides a solid foundation for further studies in the Finnish language.

Voluntary support webinars are available, but participation is not mandatory.

Learning outcomes

The student will be able to…

  • Identify and understand simple and short Finnish words and sentences spoken at a slow pace.
  • Identify and understand simple and short words and sentences in written Finnish.
  • Produce a moderate number of simple and short words and sentences in both spoken and written Finnish.
  • Manage simple conversations and everyday situations in Finnish.

Methods

The self-paced online course includes a variety of tasks that cover all aspects of the language, helping students practice and develop their skills in a comprehensive manner.

The online course will open on June 1, 2025, at 8:00 AM and close on August 31, 2025, at 8:00 PM.

This course is open to all students who wish to learn the basics of the Finnish language.

Since one ECTS credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of work, the total course workload (5 ECTS) is approximately 130 hours, depending on your prior language and technical skills, as well as your motivation.
